History
In 1967, Sol Shenk founded Consolidated Stores Corporation in Ohio. The corporation opened its first store in Columbus, Ohio called Odd Lots in 1982. In 1983, the drug store Revco bought Odd Lot Trading Co., a closeout retailer that was based in New Jersey.
Columbus-based Odd Lots owned by Consolidated Stores Corporation soon started to expand. The idea of another closeout retailer operating with a similar name did not sit well with Revco. Consolidated agreed to only use the Odd Lots name within a certain radius in Columbus.
Outside that, Consolidated used Big Lots as the name for its chain of stores. Eventually, the Odd Lots branches took up the Big Lots name as well. Consolidated Stores Corp. then purchased Toy Liquidators in 1994 which added 82 stores to its inventory and allowed it to expand to 38 states.
Growth in the toy industry did not stop there. The company acquired KB Toys which was run by Melville Corporation in 1996 to expand its presence. The stores were, however, sold to private equity shops in 2000.
The company also changed its name to Big Lots, Inc. in 2001. It also changed its ticker symbol to BLI from the previous CNS. In late 2005, it announced that it would close all its 170 stores. The company currently operates an online market that makes it easier for customers to find products and have them delivered to their homes. Big Lots remains to be one of the cheapest stores that offer items and merchandise from big brands.
