History

The company was founded by Alfred and William Billes in 1922. The first store was opened in Toronto, Canada. The location continues to act as its headquarters to date. The growth of the company can be attributed to their tendency to buy established brands and make them subsidiaries. For example, they bought Mark’s in 2001. This meant that all established stores became part of Canadian Tire and that the market share they had transferred to the main brand.

In a bid to keep up with recent technological developments, Canadian Tire established their online shop in 2000. At the time, online sales were not at their peak, though it was assumed that this would improve with the passage of time. As this was not the case, the company decided to shut down its online operations in 2009. According to the brand, many of its customers chose to conduct their business in physical stores. Online shopping reopened in 2013, following the global surge in online transactions and e-commerce.

The company subsidiaries have allowed Canadian Tire Company to have branches in cities such as Ontario.

Key Facts about the Company

The Canadian Tire Company is now a publicly traded company and has attracted multiple stakeholders from all over the country. In addition to selling car parts and accessories, the company has also had a heavy presence in Canadian Motorsport competitions. Descendants of the Billes family have been involved in car racing in the past, with one of them earning a spot among the top Canadian Motorsport drivers.

The brand has also been noted as one that has a very unique chain store set up. Normally, large companies have a single brand for all their chain stores, usually the main company brand that buys out the subsidiaries. In the case of Canadian Tire, their chain stores are divided amongst their subsidiaries, including Canadian Tire itself which has the highest number of stores, as well as Mark’s with its share of branches as well. The company also has branches with all the subsidiary brands under the same roof.

Another unique feature of the brand is Canadian Tire money. This form of currency is increasingly becoming accepted by multiple Canadian retail companies in exchange for goods or services. Experts say that this factor puts the company in a very powerful position in Canadian retail, although that may not seem like the case on the surface.
