History

Carl’s Jr. began in Los Angeles on the Florence and Central corner of a hot dog cart. It was in 1941 when Carl Karcher borrowed $311 from their Plymouth car with his wife named Margaret.

They also added $15 to the savings to buy the hot dog cart. Carl and Margaret owned and ran four hot dog stalls in Los Angeles after a couple of years. They moved to Anaheim, California, in 1945, where they opened their first full-service restaurant called Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue.

Business Directions

Carl’s Jr. has been continuously promoting quality and innovation since 1941. With its industrial vision, Carl N. Karcher made his Carl’s Jr. brand the leader in average guest checks and gross margins.

The brand operates with the philosophy that consumers will pay more for taste and quality. The many industry-defining items which have been on the menu over time have included changes to consumer experiences, including partial table-service offerings, a dual branding model, and the innovative design of restaurants.

Carl’s Jr. advertisement has played an essential role in its success in engaging with the customers’ lifestyle and behavior. It encouraged the sales of their higher cost, higher margin quality burgers. In May 2005, Paris Hilton took part in the TV commercial created by Mendelsohn Zien Advertising.

Carl’s Jr. launched its “Spicy BBQ Six Dollar Burger,” and Paris was in a suggestive swimsuit soaping and cracking on a Bentley car before biting a big piece from their burger and saying her epic phrase, “That’s hot.” Carl’s Jr. also launched sales of their All-Natural Burger involving another model Charlotte McKinney in January 2015.
