History
Chevron dates as back as the 1870s. Star Oil, one of its early predecessors, discovered oil in the Santa Susana Mountains at the Pico Canyon Oilfield in 1876. This led to the discovery of the Newhall Field that would later produce up to 25 barrels per day.
Charles N. Felton, George Loomis, Llyod Tevis and other members came together in 1879 to form the Pacific Coast Oil Company. This company went on to acquire Star Oil. Pacific Coast Oil Company was then acquired by Standard Oil in 1900.
Pacific Coast Oil, however, continued to operate independently until 1906. It merged with one of Standard Oil’s subsidiaries and formed Standard Oil Company (California). In 1911, Standard Oil was broken down into several pieces by the federal government in accordance with the Sherman Antitrust Act.
One of the pieces formed was called Standard Oil Co. (California). This went on to become Chevron. Today, Chevron owns the trademark Standard Oil in 16 states in the southeastern and western parts. It owns and operates at least one Standard-branded station in each of these states.
The brand Chevron was also incorporated in some of the company’s retail products in the 1930s. Standard Oil of California officially took over Chevron Corporation as its legal name in 2013. This was because the company had been well-known as Chevron for decades.
In 2013, the company’s retail distribution business that was located in Pakistan was acquired by Total S.A. In October of the following year, Chevron announced plans to sell 30% of its Canadian oil shale holdings to Kuwait Oil Company. In 2016, it left South Africa after being there for more than a century.
In February 2020, Chevron partnered with WAVE Equity Partners and Marubeni Corporation and invested in Carbon Clean Solutions. Carbon Clean Solutions provides carbon capture technology specifically designed for oil fields and several other industrial facilities.
