History
Rick Forman started his retail career in 1977 with an $80 loan from his dad and sold t-shirts, sweatshirts, and sportswear on weekends at the local flea markets. Rick opened the first Forman Mills Clothing Shop on Frankford Avenue in Philadelphia and soon became one of the largest flea-market operators in 1981.
The shop merged an open-air flea market with a showroom. The first Forman Mills soon became a big success with hard work, equal prices, and quality goods. In 1985, in an old warehouse in the south of Philadelphia, the first Forman Mills Clothing Factory Superstore opened.
The product range with 16,000 square meters went beyond ‘tees and sweats’ and included a wide range of clothes for men, women, and children. The company expanded out of a single shop into a chain of shops, “Big Box,” serving neighborhoods in Philadelphia, NJ, Delaware, and Maryland and now also in Michigan and New York from 1989 to 2007.
They have become a multilocation, multi-state business with the establishment of a weekend concession in the flea market and a fast-growing major retailer in the off-price clothing sector.

Summary
In October 2016, the chain was sold to the Goode Partners LLC. On October 4, Forman said he gave rewards to all full-time employees who had spent two years working in the company, with bonuses amounting to over 20,000 dollars. This happened after completing the deal.
Key facts about the company
Forman took part in the Undercover Boss TV program in 2014. He felt dissatisfied with his company’s cash register system pretending to be an allegedly young executive trainee. The machine was so sluggish that he would rather leave the shop, he said if he were a customer.
Mission and vision
Forman also figured out from this experience that his job was becoming out of contact with his staff from his position more and more unpleasantly. The hard labor of people he barely knew humbled him. He had to spend more time with his staff, he knew.
Managers must be much more impersonal in running a 3,000-person Forman organization, regretted Forman. Unfortunately, he could not afford to call random employees and discuss problems and issues of their jobs. Forman was also ready to return one day, but without any pressure, and continue working on the flea markets.
