History
Friendly’s was started by brothers Curtis and Prestley Blake in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1935. This was during the Great Depression. The brothers sold ice cream and double-dip cones for 5 cents each and initially named the shop “Friendly”.
By 1940, they had a second Friendly outlet in West Springfield. They were, however, forced to close the business when the World War II started. They re-opened after the war was over.
By 1951, they had 10 shops operating in western Massachusetts and Connecticut. This grew to 500 restaurants in 1974. New locations included Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Northeast. The brothers opened a food processing and distribution plant in Troy, Ohio the same year.
Friendly was later sold to Hershey Foods Corporation in 1979. It was now operated as a wholly owned subsidiary. In 1988, it was bought by Donald N. Smith and became part of Tennessee Foods. Smith added the “s” in Friendly’s in 1989.
In 1998, the chain of restaurants was bought and converted to Bob Evans. Kim Andereck became the vice president of franchise development. He led the franchise part of the program and thanks to his efforts, up to 50% of Friendly’s locations are currently franchise-owned.
The restaurant was later bought in 2007 by Sun Capital Condos for $337 million. It was changed back to Friendly’s and the first store under the name Friendly’s Express was opened in Mansfield, Massachusetts.
The company announced that it would be closing all 14 locations in Ohio on November 25, 2014. Friendly’s ice cream manufacturing business was sold to Dean Foods for $155 million on June 20, 2016. However, Sun Capital Partners remained the owner of the chain.
