History
In 1977, Allan Smidt and Eric Smidt, father and son founded Harbor Freight and Salvage. Their first office was a tiny building at the heart of North Hollywood in California. It was initially a mail-order company that thrived on both returned and liquidated merchandise. The company name was later changed to Harbor Freight Tools after registering some local success and was ready to spread into other states. It was until 1980 when Harbor Freight was able to open its first retail store. The honors went to Lexington in Kentucky. This was followed by an appetite for more stores and in 1990 the number stood at 11 stores. In 1991, the company acquired US General, another mail-order company that was going under for bankruptcy. From there, there was no looking back and in 2018 the company had 900 stores under its belt.

This company goes direct to manufacturers to source products thus cutting out the middlemen. In return, they pass down all the savings to the final consumer. That is the magic they use to sell their tools 80% less than their competitors. The company’s interest is in everyday-use tools such as shop equipment, power tools, generators, and hundreds of accessories. Currently, there are more than 1000 stores in the US spread all over 47 states. The customer base is way beyond the 40 million marks and among them are loyal buyers. Well, when you need some tools for your home or work projects, you now know where to get the best bargaining.
Excellent place to get some DYI devices. I don’t recommend their technical devices, but they work well for the one who uses them every now and then. Your devices are a fraction of the cost of qualified instruments.
Before closing and consolidating with the Fremont, I used to visit the HF in Newark. This branch is excellent and even after the deadline was past, they never hesitated to return. They also helped to load and return the old toolbox twice. Once. They’ll check an old one for you if you don’t have a coupon and inquire.
