History

KFC was started back in 1930 in North Corbin in Kentucky by Harland Sanders during the great depression. Sanders sold fried chicken from a roadside restaurant during the Great Depression. But it was not until 1952 that the business had its first franchise, which opened in Salt Lake City in Utah. At the moment, the restaurant has its headquarters in Kentucky and Texas.

Sanders, who went by the name “Colonel Sanders” became a prominent pop culture icon, and he helped make fried chicken a popular menu item in the American fast food industry. Sanders would find the management of the fast-growing company overwhelming, and he would sell it off to investors that included John Y. Brown Jr and Jack C. Massey in 1964. The company would change ownership a number of times after that, and today, it is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands.

Even today, the company seeks to use chicken as its main selling point. To grow the business, expansion is still a major strategy for this restaurant business, which is why its operations throughout the world continue to increase. Only about 11 percent of these outlets are owned by the company itself, and the rest are owned by franchise owners.

The company also operates in non-traditional locations including filling stations, stadia, theme parks, and even colleges. In its aggressive expansion plans, the company has even ventured in global destinations where many global restaurants do not venture. For instance, KFC is the leading US fast food chain in Africa, where it already has several dozen outlets to its name.

Growth in Asia is also ongoing, as is the case with several other parts throughout the world. In fact, the company’s largest market is China, where it operates over 4,000 outlets.
