History
It is the 3rd oldest store in North America (after James F. Brine’s in Massachusetts and Burghardt Sports Goods in Milwaukee) that Morris A. Modell was founded in 1889 in Manhattan as a single store. The first place on Cortlandt Street in Lower Manhattan opened Modell, a Jewish immigrant from Hungary. (Morris’s brother George created the pawn store chain Concept in Manhattan and Brooklyn as a spinoff in 1893 and ran separately.)
It has been a family-owned company for four generations of the Model family over the years. While Modell’s is best known as a retailer of sports goods, it also ran a full-line” discount trading chain from the Mid-1950s to 1989, when Modell opted to focus on its sports goods operations part due to increasing competition on the retail discounts market. Modelle also worked in the NY-Metro region, called Modell’s Shoppers World (and shortly as White Models)
Even the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundations were established with his wife Shelby Modell, William Modell, who became president in 1985.
Modell’s 152 stores were primarily operating in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania at its height. Over these last years, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Columbia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire have extended the chain. Its store is on 234 West 42nd Street, in the vicinity of Times Square.
In the early 21st century, Modell faced dropping profits that Mitchell Modell accused of increasing competition, weak sports team results, and elevated climate-change temperatures. Modell borrowed $6.7 million in May 2019 to escape bankruptcy; it revealed in February 2020 that it would shut 24 stores down in February 2013. In March 2020, however, the corporation filed bankruptcies for Chapter 11 and announced that most of its 134 companies would be liquidated, and Tiger Capital named the liquidators. On March 13, 2020, the resolution began. At the end of August 2020, all the stores were closed.
