History

Ross Department opened its first store in 1950. San Bruno in California was the place of choice for the store. The brain behind this idea was none other than Morris Ross, known by his friends as Morrie. Morris was a workaholic and could spend over 85 hours each week buying and taking care of the store’s books.

In 1958, Ross decided to sell the store and try his luck in real estate. The new owner, William Isackson quickly opened six more stores to expand the reach of the business in California. In 1982, the store changed hands again and this time to a group of investors. One of them was Mervin Morris. The new group of owners changed the store into off-price retailing units. In three short years, the company had 107 stores under its belt. In 1995 the total sales for the year stood at a staggering $1.4 billion from 292 stores.

As they say, the rest is history as the chain has scaled up the charts to be one of the largest of its kind in the USA.
