History of the Speedway Brand
Speedway was started in Michigan in the first half of the 20th Century. It was initially known as Speedway 79. It was later bought in 1959 by Marathon, which was then known as the Ohio Oil Company. All locations were turned into Marathon stores.
Self-service gasoline had just started picking up. As more states began to legalize it, Marathon changed the names of all higher-volume convenience stores and service stations to “Speedway”. The idea worked well as most of these spots began to draw more traffic. Marathon expanded the idea across all its main territories in the Southeastern and Midwest states. The expansion was also backed by multiple acquisitions of smaller gasoline stations. Such chains included GasAmerica, Gastown, Bonded, Cheker, Ecol, Value, Port, United, Wake Up, and Starvin’ Marvin.
By end of 2011, Speedway had bought 23 convenience stores in Illinois and Indiana. The numbers grew as it bought 100 new stores in 2012. This included 87 stores from GasAmerica in Indiana and Ohio and 10 stores from Road Ranger LLC in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky.
By December 2, 2016, up to 12% of all stores carried E85 Ethanol. There are currently 326 Speedway stores that have E85, with one store carrying CNG. Almost all the stores in Tennessee and Pittsburgh Metro offer E85.
