The idea of establishing Sports Authority came from former CEO of Herman’s World of Sports, Jack Smith. He opened the first store in 1987 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He had tried unsuccessfully to introduce the concept of having a megastore that had a wide range of sporting goods at Herman’s.
With support from a few venture capitalists, he was finally able to do so. By 1990, he had eight megastores in Florida. Despite not having realized any profits yet, he still believed his idea could work with the right amount of capital for expansion. Joseph Antonini noticed Smith’s confidence and decided to purchase the sporting mini-chain.
With the backing of Antonini, who was the then chairman of Kmart Corporation, Smith was able to fully implement his expansion program. By 1994, he had over 10 stores. Sports Authority was also able to develop technological infrastructure that was needed to support long-term growth.
While competing companies suffered from poor service and unpleasant shopping experiences, Smith was able to make displays in the megastores more attractive. He also deployed well-trained employees that provided high-quality customer service.
Sports Authority even became the first sporting goods retailer to reach $1 billion in sales. In 2006, it was acquired by Leonard Green & Partners affiliates in a transaction that was valued at $1.4 billion. This marked the end of Sports Authority being a publicly-traded company. It, however, went bankrupt in 2016 and was sold to Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Some of the different sporting items that Sports Authority sold were private-labeled. Others came from different vendors. They included seasonal clothing and outdoor items from Alpine Design, clothing and snowboards from Sims, Aspire women’s sportswear, SA Gear men’s sportswear and fitness equipment, trampolines and outdoor games from Parkside, Tommy Armour and Ram golf items, among others.
After refusing to sell its products through Sports Authority for seven years, Nike began selling its footwear and apparel to the fast-growing chain. This paved way for other upscale brands such as Timberland, Teva, and Starter apparel who quickly followed suit. This significantly added to the company’s efforts to offer customers a comprehensive selection of sporting goods.
Sports Authority was indeed an authority chain store in the sporting industry. It offered all sorts of sporting goods for American customers for years. This included workout gear, cleats for soccer, treadmills, and all types of equipment for all types of sporting activities.
