History
Leo Kahn and Thomas G. Stemberg, former competitors in the retail supermarket industry in New England, created Staples.
Staples’ concept was introduced in 1985 when Stemberg was working on a new company plan. His printer needed a rubber but could not procure a ribbon, as his local dealer was closed for the day of Freedom. Frustration with the reliance on essential supplies in small shops and Stemberg’s experience in the food industry led to a vision for a superstore of bureau supplies.
In 1986, the first shop opened in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood. Bain co-founder Mitt Romney has worked on the boards of directors for the next 15 years, helping shape their business model and began with funding from private equity companies like Bain Capital.
Staples established its Canadian subsidiary, The Business Depot, in 1991, and started opening shops under this brand, though all stores were renamed “Staples” about ten years later. In Vaughan, Ontario, north of Toronto, the first store opened. The following year, Staples opened its first British shop in Swansea and started to expand into Europe.
Staples joined the Fortune 500 companies at its 10th anniversary in 1996, with revenues over $3 billion. Staples and Office Depot posted on plans to merge on 4 September 1996. Despite OfficeMax’s rivalry, the Federal Trade Commission decided that the combined business would disproportionately raise the cost of office supplies as many local markets do not have OfficeMax that would control the fusion. Staples claimed that chains such as Walmart and Circuit City constitute serious rivalry, but the FTC had no impact on that claim. After the FTC declined to merge, the two companies formed a rivalry.
Shortly before construction started in 1998, Staples secured naming rights for the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Also, for approximately $685 million in cash and stock, Staples bought the Quill Company, an online and catalog retailer of office supplies.
Between 1999 and 2001, unsuccessful efforts were made to become a telecommunications company when Staples created Staples Communications from an investment group after acquiring the Canadian company Caricom. The company was sold later and renamed NextiraOne to the Platinum Equities.

Summary
In Brighton, Massachusetts, on 1 May 1986, the company opened the first store. By 1996, it hit Fortune 500 and later purchased the Quill Corporation office supply company. Staples started to close some of its stores in 2014, following the growing competition in the e-commerce market. Pins revealed in 2015 its intention to purchase Office Depot and OfficeMax. However, because of this consolidation, the purchase was blocked on antitrust grounds.
After the failed acquisition, Staples has begun to refocus its activities on downplaying it’s brick and mortar outlets. The group was formally divided into three “independently managed and capitalized” businesses in 2017, following its sale to Sycamore Partners, with Staples as their name and its US retail operations and Canadian retail operations separated from the B2B.
